You Need Only to Be Still

Exodus 14:13-14 (New International Version)
13 Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."

Sometimes we are actively engaged in battles that no-one sees in our daily lives; battles against negativity, misunderstandings; struggles within our own hearts.

What a powerful encouragement these verses are for just such a circumstance. The battle belongs to the Lord; I need only to "be still."

Only to "be still?" Is it really that simple? Yes, for in his presence we find that "peace which transcends all understanding." (Philippians 4:7)

In his presence our hearts are turned from the twin sins of pride and Self. In his presence our hearts are turned from earth towards heaven. In his presence we are changed.

Being "still" is the HARDEST thing to be when you have been hurt or misunderstood or misjudged. But yes, it is the most powerful weapon in the battle of our lives and for our minds. It gets "us" out of the way. If we are truly "still", there is nothing left for us to do but wait for God to act. (We can't gossip, or defend, or perseverate or become bitter or ANYTHING). The scriptures have a lot to say about the value of "waiting on the Lord". Our strength is renewed among so many other things! And it's SO MUCH FUN when he begins to unroll the fruit of our waiting. It is darkest before the dawn (the waiting gets harder and harder and seems to mount to a great crescendo of "being still" just before he acts. The temptation is to jump out and accomplish what we can ourselves in the situation, but oh, we stand to miss so much if we give in to that. God's ability to work out our difficulties is just so far, far, superior to our own. It truly is "worth waiting for".

Ere Zij God--Glory to God in the Highest! A Dutch Carol

By Belinda This beautiful Dutch carol was shared today by a friend of Dutch ancestry, on Facebook. I had never heard it before but absolutely loved it. It moved me deeply, especially at the end after the crowd leaves the church and then breaks into spontaneous singing again around a brazier, with the sound of chiming church bells in the background. Listen to it with headphones or a good speaker to get the full effect of the harmonies. And happy first Sunday in Advent!

Samson Beaver and his Family

I first posted this in 2009, a little show and tell about one of my favourite photographs. Back then it hung on a wall, but now it's in my bathroom where I see it every morning! I'd forgotten the history behind the story, researched when I first posted this and thought that current readers might enjoy it--a story from a time when this land was still being discovered, not so very long ago. This photograph was taken by Mary Schaffer; artist, photographer, writer and naturalist, in 1907. It is of a Stoney Indian named Samson Beaver, with his wife Leah and daughter, Frances Louise. I bought the photo on a postcard, on a trip to British Columbia and it hangs framed, on the wall I face when sitting at my laptop. I love it. Don't you just feel as if you could gather Frances Louise up in your arms and cuddle her?
